Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection: 10 Things to Check Before Buying a Used Car in Mississauga
Why a Pre-Purchase Inspection Is Worth Every Penny
Buying a used vehicle is one of the biggest financial decisions you'll make. A professional pre-purchase inspection can save you thousands by revealing hidden problems before you commit. At T6 Automotive, we've seen everything from minor wear to major frame damage that sellers didn't disclose—or didn't know about.
1. Engine Condition and Performance
Start with the basics: does the engine start easily? Listen for unusual noises like knocking, ticking, or rattling. Check for oil leaks around the engine bay, inspect belt condition, and look at fluid levels and quality. A professional inspection includes a computerized diagnostic scan to check for stored fault codes that might not be obvious during a test drive.
2. Transmission Operation
For automatic transmissions, shifts should be smooth without slipping, grinding, or delayed engagement. Manual transmissions should shift cleanly through all gears. Check the transmission fluid for burnt smell or dark color, which indicates overheating and potential internal damage.
3. Brake System
Brakes are a critical safety component. Inspect pad thickness, rotor condition, brake lines, and calipers. During your test drive, the vehicle should stop in a straight line without pulling to one side or vibrating. Listen for squeaking or grinding noises that indicate worn components.
4. Suspension and Steering
Worn suspension components affect handling, ride quality, and tire wear. Check for excessive bouncing, uneven tire wear patterns, and steering play. Shocks and struts should be free of leaks. Power steering should operate smoothly without whining noises.
5. Frame and Underbody
In Ontario's salt-heavy winter environment, rust is a major concern. Inspect the frame, floor pans, wheel wells, and undercarriage for corrosion. Surface rust is normal; structural rust that compromises metal integrity is not. Pay special attention to vehicles from coastal areas or those with unknown maintenance history.
6. Electrical Systems
Test all lights, signals, horn, windows, locks, mirrors, and dashboard gauges. Check the battery's age and condition—replacing a weak battery is inexpensive compared to being stranded. Modern vehicles have complex electrical systems that can develop intermittent issues hard to detect without proper testing equipment.
7. Tires and Wheels
Check tire tread depth (minimum 4/32 inch for safety), even wear patterns, and age. Tires older than six years should be replaced regardless of tread remaining. Inspect wheels for damage or excessive runout that could cause vibration at highway speeds.
8. HVAC System
Test both heating and air conditioning thoroughly. In Mississauga's climate, you need reliable heat in winter and cooling in summer. AC should blow cold air within a minute of starting; heater should produce warm air quickly. Listen for unusual noises from the compressor or blower motor.
9. Body and Paint Condition
Look for mismatched paint colors, uneven panel gaps, or overspray that might indicate previous accident repairs. Check for dents, scratches, and stone chips. While cosmetic issues don't affect drivability, they can impact resale value and may hint at more significant underlying damage.
10. Vehicle History Report
Always request a CarProof or similar vehicle history report. This reveals accident history, previous owners, odometer readings, lien status, and whether the vehicle has been declared a total loss. Cross-reference this information with what you find during your physical inspection.
